Building muscle means spending hours in the gym and eating the rights foods. Your body needs certain nutritional requirements to do certain things and building muscle isn’t any different. It’s somewhat surprising how many weightlifters and muscle building enthusiasts do not take the time to plan their diets. If you are hoping to develop your muscles and you are not eating the right foods then you are not doing yourself much good at all. Eating the right foods is crucial to your success as a bodybuilder.

Bodybuilders are not necessarily those bulging men we see on television who pull semi trucks behind their backs. If you are developing your muscles for any reason you are building your body, which by definition makes you a body builder. There is not one specific diet for all bodybuilders. On the contrary a wide variety of different muscle building diets exist including protein, anabolic, and low carb diets. The particular diet you chose depends mainly on the kind of body building you are engaged in.

By far the most crucial dietary component necessary for proper muscle development is protein. A diet high in protein is absolutely crucial for the development of muscle mass. If you are a medium to heavy lifter you should consume approximately 1.5 grams of protein per day per pound of body weight. It’s very difficult to consume this much protein in a day by consuming regular foods. Purchasing protein supplements is a great way to add protein to your diet. The best protein supplement on the market right now is whey protein which can be purchased relatively inexpensively.

Some body builders prefer a low carb, high protein diet. In fact, the low carb, high protein diet is actually the preferred diet of Olympic athletes. This particular diet involves consuming at least 100 grams of protein a day and strictly limiting your carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates can be greatly reduced by switching from regular to diet pop and eliminating candy and sweets (your dentist will thank you for this one). Unfortunately the low carb diet can increase fatigue and can be very difficult to stick to over the long term.

The best way to understand your nutritional needs is to consult with a nutritionist. Most health clubs and gyms have nutritionists on staff who can work with you to develop a proper diet plan. Nutritionists can be more than a little pricey but the cost is usually well worth it. If you can’t afford the service of a nutritionist then consider doing some research online. Many websites offer diet planning services at little or no cost, although they are not as accurate as the advice of a professional nutritionist.
