There’s this young guy at the gym I go to that is busting his butt trying to bulk up. He’s about 5’10’ and probably doesn’t weigh more than 145. No fat at all.

I watch him work out and he’s really dedicated and works very hard. The problem is he doesn’t do the right things to pack on muscle.

He gets on the treadmill and runs for about 5 minutes to warm up. Then he does a bunch of isolation lifts. He does one set after another without more than a few seconds break between them. Then he gets back on the teadmill and runs for another 5-10 minutes.

He needs to cut out almost all of the isolation lifts. Since he’s trying to bulk up he needs to work heavy compound lifts, such as bench press, squats, dead lifts, military press, dips, lat pulldowns or pull ups.

He also needs to rest more between sets. He needs to stay out of the cardio zone. Keeping your body in the cardio zone is fine if you have fat your trying burn off, but if you’re a skinny guy trying to bulk up, you’re working against yourself.

Take your time between sets, work heavy compound movements, get plenty of rest, and eat, eat, eat. If you still aren’t gaining any weight, eat more.
